Brad and I went kayaking today on the Okatoma.

Brad before the falls

It was a really nice float, especially considering it hasn't rained in weeks. I set up a gallery (BC-need to create a gallery for this post) for the pics. We saw a couple of deer and a turtle or two, but no alligators.

If any of the pics look a little blurry, it's because Brad put the dry bag down in the creek and let the edge lap over into the water. Nothing was ruined, though, and it made a nice effect on the next several pictures with a really hazy aurora around the pics.

I took a spill in the water on the last waterfall as I was of course showing off. Some unknown angel was out there in a kayak to retrieve my kayak and canoe. The water was chilly and I was wearing boat shoes, so it took a minute to recover and start swimming for the kayak. Brad of course took the same waterfall without incident, but went back again and turned over on purpose.

Notes to Bruce for next spring: Turn left at Seminary and go through town until you cross the railroad tracks, then take a right on Old Hwy 49. Seminary Canoe Rentals is to the left with a big red sign marking the turn (31 degrees 30.890 north, 89 degrees 27.707 west). We put in at the Seminary bridge and floated back to the rental place. It was supposed to be a 3 hour float, but we stretched it to 5 1/2 hours. There are 4 major rapids, with the last the coolest by far. Right after the last one, you are 3/4 mile from the rental place. There are really neat places right after the last waterfall where you could sit for hours and listen to the small waterfall (see the last few pics in the gallery). If you're going to camp, call them first. Next time, take the things you took this time (dry bag, GPS, camera, flexible ice chest), but also wear your waterskiing gloves for the paddling (take your own paddle? The rental paddles sucked!) and take clothes to change before coming home. The showers are cold water only, but Brad was a lot better off having a shower than I was. 601/722-4301
