About

I created and curated Corkerns.com for about a decade with the majority of posts in the middle of that span. I think the first iteration might have been hard-coded HTML, then TextPattern, then Wordpress. I enjoyed it for a while and I think Rhonda did also, but the kids got too big for their britches began to resent their lives chronicled online.

I took it offline with really having a proper backup as Wordpress didn't have a tool to export the entire site as it does now. So I had the SQL database of posts with relational links to other data like comments on blog posts, tags, and so on. When I recently began thinking about the content, I didn't find it convenient to browse an SQL database and view the field POSTS without visible images! So I looked around for a way to put the site back online at least temporarily so I can revisit the posts in my retirement.

I have been fooling with 11ty in a non-serious way just to try to refresh some old web skills that are as decayed as my core. So I turned there first since Wordpress is a hot mess now in so many ways (organizational strife, big hacking target, etc.). I found the 11ty conversion to Wordpress page, which relies on converting an existing Wordpress site to Markdown blog posts (among other talents). My site wasn't online, so I had to overcome that obstacle first. I tried using the SQL command as it was saved in 2011 to recreate a Wordpress blog on my web host, but the structure of the file had changed. After fooling around with the SQL and modifying the existing Wordpress database structure, I got my posts to upload with enough data (mainly posting date) to be useful to me. I then turned back to @11ty/import, but couldn't get that to work. I wound up using an alternative method from lonekorean listed on the page. My next problem was that the previous site had links to Flickr and Vimeo and I no longer have accounts at either, so the Flickr photo galleries and embedded video from Vimeo failed. So I just plan to go through the posts one by one and recreate as needed using another method.

This recreated site is not an exact duplicate as it seemed prudent to delete some old posts. If you put your pea brain to work, you'll figure out why that's true. If you still need a hint, consider:

I'm starting with the oldest posts and working forward towards the last post in August 2011. Who knows-maybe we'll pick this back up again.

Pico CSS

The site is built with Pico CSS. The minimal style suits me very well. You can see various elements in place on this demonstration page.
